Editing Process

The first thing we did was imported all of the footage into IMovie HD. We decided to stop the letter-boxing process because we did not use letter-boxing for any of the footage imported. We knew that we were able to, if we wanted, to use the feature as we could apply it when we were using the tools within IMovie.

After importing al the footage we then split the clips up to make it easier to identify between each of the shots. This would help us during the editing process in identifying and choosing what clip we waned to use.

We then imported the song "The City". We needed to import the song so that we were able to make sure that all the different clips fitted with the song. When we were cutting the clips we made sure that we got the clips and the song at the same time. by doing this we made sure that there was no lag. When doing this we were not able to get it completely spot on, but however we did in the end. We found that it was just a case of being patient.

We had to decided which shots that we were going to keep and which shots we did not feel were good enough to use. We chose the shots that we thought that would be best for our song but there were on a few occasions shots that we were unable to pick because we thought that they did not go with with the song.

We all decided that at the start of the song we wanted a shot of the city. We put in place the panning establishing long shot of Bristol, we each agreed that it looked ok but the quality of the footage was fantastic. We then noticed that you were able to use different effects. We all thought that the idea of using the black and white for each of the city shots but having the performance remain in colour would be a good idea. After deciding this we places each of the city shots in black and white and then put the first couple of frames together. After watching it we all thought that it was not going to work and it looked quite dull and boring.

When filming we had filmed a couple of different shots of the traffic in a couple of different locations. After watching each of the shots we thought that they would both look really good if they were sped up. We noticed that in one of the tools in IMovie there was a certain tool which helps you speed up clips. We decided that we were going to use this tool. We tried using the tool a few times but came across the problem that it would not work. We did not give up on using the effect as we were determined that we would be able to figure out how to use it. In the end we found out how to use the tool. We were then able to use effects such as speed up, reverse and slow down. This was a new skill that the group had learnt whilst using IMovie. This was one new skill that we had leant since our AS production.

After finally completing the editing of the footage of the city we new that we had to start on the performance. When we were filming Josh, he sang the song so it made it easier for us to match up the footage with the parts of the song. We also had the song on in the background when doing this. We did this because we knew that this would help us a great deal. We felt that some of the frames did not need any editing as the mis en scene of the shot was perfect and the colours were really picked up in the recording. We chose what parts of the song we wanted Josh to be singing in the video and cut these out and matched them to the song.

After watching the video we decided that a few more shots taken in the car should be included to give the film a sense of movement and direction. We felt a few of the cuts could have been in different places to match the tempo and rhythm of the song. So we made these adjustments and then watched the video again. This time we were much happier with the outcome.

We then added in transitions between clips to make sure that the video had a smooth finish and to make sure that everything fitted together in the right way. The main transition that we used was overlap. Overlap blends the end of the last clip with the beginning of the next to create a seamless change. When we added our transitions we used trial and error to estimate how long each transition should last. Music videos use transitions more frequently to blend the clips another reason why they are used because the can compliment the music.

The final part of the editing process was to add titles at the beginning and at the end of the song. After watching a number of different songs on music channels and on the internet we found that this was the way in which the artist and the song title is introduced.

After completing the editing process we all sat down and watched the video to see if we were happy with the final outcome. We then decided that we had to get some audience feedback on our video.
